The Madness of Fantasy Football

So what’s the deal with men and fantasy football?  The issue is very simple yet so complex.  Anyone involved in this realm will attest that it’s a terrible addiction.  Believe it or not, the madness that is fantasy football actually begins before the 17 week NFL season actually starts.  And when things finally do kick off, the trend only grows more disturbing.  As we speak, there are literally millions of average men playing GM and trying to negotiate trades to gain a winning edge.  Each and everyday they tune in to NFL coverage in preparation for the next array of games, preparation that consumes the week, taking away time from their families while causing them to be far less productive on the job.

Fantasy football is like an irritating itch that needs to be scratched, a burning fire that can only be partially extinguished through highly rated performances by guys like Adrian Peterson and Drew Brees.  You see, the fantasy football fanatic is quite stingy and far from a team player.  They don’t care that Tennessee’s hard-hitting defense has lead them to an 8-0 start and are the least bit concerned that the New York football Giants could be well on their way to another Super Bowl appearance.  No, the fantasy football player has a lust for the individual stat column.  They could care less if Dallas wins the game, as long as T.O. puts up big numbers in the terms of yardage and touchdowns.  When dismantling the crave and examining fantasy football for what it really does, one could pose the question - should these guys and increasing number of women be viewed in the same manner as gamblers and drug addicts?  Perhaps.

How it Begins

Many people do not have a clear understanding of fantasy football and how one becomes addicted.  That’s okay, because whether you know it or not, fantasy football is all around you.  Aside from replaying the big matchups on Sunday, professional sports commentators offer live televised coverage solely on this addictive pastime.  Sports radio stations are deeply involved, "Fantasy Geekly" being one of many shows that allocate hours of air time each week to contribute to the crave, having the nerve to give recommendations on who should be traded and their opinions on whether or not L.T. will step it up this week.  It doesn’t matter if you work in an office or warehouse setting, fantasy football owners are sure to be a part of the staff, congregating in cafeterias and cubicles tallying up the latest numbers to find out just who is ahead in their imaginary league.

A Costly Addiction

Just like any addiction, fantasy football is often very costly.  Die-hard team owners base their play off the old adage of “put up or shut up” and will not hesitate to throw a few dollars on the line.  As several leagues have been established online, fantasy football has essentially become a million dollar business, offering everything from free merchandise and meaningless incentives to cold hard cash; for a fee of course.  Those who indulge in this fictional sport will gladly give up a new Sony Playstation 3 or vintage bottle of wine in exchange for a 4 touchdown performance by Kurt Warner and 150 yards on the ground by Michael Turner.  These addicts willingly deprive themselves of sleep, watching SportsCenter until they’ve tallied up each and every number and combing the web for information until their fingers go numb.  A fantasy footballer has no problem missing out on a few meals as long as they know whether or not Tony Romo will come off Injury Reserve for next Sunday’s game.  When the whistle blows, fantasy football maniacs gather around like a wild pack of wolves, aimlessly switching through channels in attempt to watch 10 different games while rooting on the individual players and defenses that make up their squad.  It’s all maddening but only becoming increasingly popular as more have become addicted.

The Sick Truth

This is the world of fantasy football, a twisted realm where the less fortunate live vicariously through NFL players who believe the exact opposite of its maniacal concept, established millionaires who realize that there is no “I” in team and individual stats mean nothing if a win isn’t secured.  Yes my friend, its puzzling and disconcerting to say the least.  With that said, I’m 6-2 to this year, and if Kurt Warner keeps putting up numbers like this, I’ll be well on the way to my first league championship.  No denial here, I’m a proud fantasy football addict.
